There are as many ways to make Dichroic Glass as there are artists making it. Then there are as many ways to display dichroic glass in a finished piece of jewelry.
A dichroic material is one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths or colors. Dichroic glass has this ability and shimmers in various colors depending how each piece is made and viewed.
Dichroic glass is glass containing multiple micro-layers of different metals and metal oxides between other layers of glass or crystal, which give the glass its color changing properties. Dichroic glass dates back to at least the 4th century. By controlling the thickness of each layer and type of material used, the artist has some control over the final effect. However, each piece is unique as variations in materials and firing cannot always be duplicated.
One property of dichroic glass is that it has a transmitted color and a completely different reflected color. As light passes through each piece, certain wavelengths of light either pass through or are reflected. This causes multiple colors to be displayed in the dichroic glass, that shift as the piece is viewed at different angles.
Some of the pendants displayed here are made with black glass to create a greater contrast with the metal oxides used in typical dichroic glass. The end result is truly stunning!
