Review of the "Double Buddy Bag" Sugar Glider bonding pouchFrom Casper and Liezl (who do sugar glider rescue in South Africa!):
We were faced with a difficult situation a while back: we wanted to
introduce our two glider colonies to each other - Kaimon and Kaida - a
breeding pair (Kaimon was neutered 6 months earlier), and Gizmo, Boesman
and Muchu - 3 neutered boys.
What made the situation more difficult was the fact that they all knew
each other very well being in the same room for more than a year and
playing in the same glider playroom for the same period.
We decided that it will be beneficial if we could carry them all in one
bonding pouch so that they can sniff each other the whole day, see each
other continually, while being under our watchful eye.
So we asked Jill Marie
Chambers from Bosom Buddy Creations in New
Jersey, USA, to make us a double bonding pouch for this specific
reason.The "Double Buddy Bag", as she called it, proved quite
challenging to make as we had very specific requirements. For example,
as we stay in an area where it gets very hot, the bag had to be made of
"cool" material.We wanted a detachable strap, vent holes in two places,
and the most difficult request - mesh (pet screen) in the middle in
order to separate the two colonies while they could still see each
other, without the possibility to hurt or scratch each other.
Email conversations went smooth and Jill Marie provided us with great
options regarding fabric choices. We made our decision and were
continually advised by her on which options fitted together nicely.
Jill Marie posted the pouch to us and then the long agonizing
wait. Unfortunately a postal strike in South Africa prolonged the
waiting
time and we had the five of them introduced to each other before the
pouch arrived.
We still had great use for the pouch as all 5 gliders could be carried
together. It was made from the best material with excellent
workmanship. Great care was placed in every single stitch. The detachable
strap was made just the way we wanted it to be, with clips on the pouch
that allowed us to hang it in their cage. The good quality double
zippers used made it easy to keep both colonies together in a safe and
secure manner.

Review of the Double Buddy Bag:Correspondence between Laura my official "tester" of the first Double Buddy Bag and myself:
"I absolutely love it!...So far, I love it! Introductions are actually starting a little sooner
than I'd planned... so it's getting lots of use already. It does seem to
chill her out a bit to have him in the next pouch, and he sleeps like a rock in it when she's there. It's also so much nicer than wearing two separate pouches. Until it
came in, I was wearing the bra pouch with the original buddy bag, and
while that worked, it felt kinda... awkward. Especially for her, I
think this is way better. It at least lets her know she's not really
alone. Even after they're together, it'll still be awesome for vet
trips and in the event I need to keep them separate for medical stuff,
and I like that the pouches are still big enough that both could still
fit in one side together."
But Laura did have one thing she mentioned that I needed to change, and that was that the ends of the pouch folded up a bit. I am happy to announce I changed the design slightly and that is no longer a problem!
Then I asked her "Can you take a photo of the bag when it is "folded up"? If I see what
you were describing I may be able to figure out a way to change it.
Does it inhibit the function of the bag or make it undesirable in any
way? What would you like to see different in it? Would you recommend it to others to help with intros?"
Her response: "Honestly I think it's awesome as is. I would recommend it,
particularly as a 'first step' thing maybe, but also for the potential
in the event that one gets ill or needs vet care. Like if one of them
had something done, or an injury, you could still carry both without
worrying that they would be trying to 'fix' each other."
Thanks Laura for your input, as it helped me to greatly improve the design and get rid of that "folding" thing on the ends!
